REAL: Review of English and American Literature [Yingmei wenxue pinglun]

Review of English and American Literature (REAL) is a journal of the English and American Literature Association of the Republic of China founded in 1993. REAL is published by Bookman Books Ltd. biannually (June and December) and is devoted to publishing innovative research results concerning English and American literature written in Mandarin Chinese. REAL was rated as the first-class journal by the National Science Council of Taiwan in 2003. Contributions from domestic and foreign researchers of English and American literatures are welcomed.

在班雅明與德勒茲之間思考翻譯：以清末民初林紓及薛紹徽的文學翻譯活動為引子

在清末民初大規模翻譯西方文學運動裏，林紓及薛紹徽兩人都不諳外文，分別由通外文者逐句說明原文旨意，再由他們分別修改、潤飾、記錄下來。本論文以林紓及薛紹徽等不同於一般定義下的翻譯活動為引子，導出班雅明與德勒茲與瓜達里在翻譯方面的不同論點，並藉著他們論點之歧異處，探究翻譯史上長期以來有關直譯與意譯之爭，以及翻譯用於文學／文化研究，乃至生命科技研究之可能途徑。 本論文選擇以林紓及薛紹徽參與譯事為佐證或引子，主要原因在於他們的翻譯活動挑戰班雅明有關翻譯的概念。若按班雅明在〈譯者之天職〉裏所陳述的觀點，其實口述者已完成翻譯的程序，相較於譯者在原文與譯文之間突然領悟如何克服語言間的異質性，再將領悟轉為譯文，林紓與薛紹徽筆錄、整理、美化文字，可說絲毫沾不上翻譯的邊。其次，林紓為清末民初西方文學中譯運動裏造成巨大影響者，薛紹徽素有中國第一位女譯者之美譽，他們的譯事活動迫使翻譯的視野有必要重整。 改從德勒茲與瓜達里的角度來看，無論是林紓與口譯者之間的合作關係，或薛紹徽與陳壽彭夫婦的閨房譯述，都構成所謂的塊莖或朋友關係。因為任何兩者都可能構成塊莖，而打破屬於樹根類親屬關係隱含的疆域，連帶在跨越疆域中把翻譯帶進轉譯或轉碼。平輩的朋友關係宛如內在於知識的一連串對等連接詞「和」，在競爭與協助的一連串環節中，影響甚至改變論述的內容。

不在場的譯者：論冷戰期間英美文學翻譯的匿名出版及盜印問題

本文描述冷戰期間(1949-1990)，由於兩岸三地譯者與譯本未能自由流動，造成臺灣英美文學翻譯中的大規模匿名出版和盜印現象。臺灣戰後雖然政治立場親美，經濟文化各方面都依賴美國，英語亦為臺灣最重要的外語，但仍有約四成的英美文學譯本實乃抄襲大陸或香港譯本。主要的因素包括：臺灣在戒嚴期間的禁書政策、香港美新處的政治考量、以及商業利益等。抄襲來源包括一九四九年以前的大陸舊譯本、香港出版的譯作、以及大陸一九五○年以後的新譯本。翻譯書目混亂不實，與漠視翻譯互為因果：先是政治因素造成譯者身份不明，而譯者身份不明、抄襲浮濫又造成社會漠視譯者的結果，以致於解嚴至今超過四分之一個世紀，翻譯書目仍然錯誤百出，影響翻譯史研究甚鉅。由於臺灣翻譯書籍相當依賴不在場的譯者，許多譯作的臺灣初版與原初版年相隔達數十年，因而臺灣翻譯史不能從一九四九年作為起點，還必須先釐清譯者身份與翻譯的實際出版年代。

翻譯經典，經典翻譯：以吳爾芙的《自己的房間》為例

在臺灣的出版市場，文學翻譯向來具有不可或缺的地位。世界文學經典或多或少就像是一個品牌保證，在今日的全球化勢力席捲之下，得以傳布到世界各地，以不同的語言譯介到其他國家與文化，使不瞭解源語的讀者能夠更方便有效率地閱讀各國作品。隨著翻譯研究的發展，愈來愈多的學者強調翻譯及譯者不應該再隱身，我們應該正視翻譯及譯者的影響力及地位。本論文以吳爾芙的《自己的房間》三個中文譯本為主要分析案例，輔以李察．巴哈的《天地一沙鷗》及村上春樹作品，試圖剖析經典翻譯與翻譯經典之不同。藉由法國社會學家布迪厄所闡述之不同文化生產場域理論，本論文強調為了使文學翻譯的地位得到更大的肯定，體現譯者作為重寫者的價值，出版界及教育界應該從文化生產場域著手改變，如此一來，翻譯文學應可在世界文學的舞臺上散發出更耀眼的光芒。

文學翻譯的挫敗與挑戰：以翻譯辛約翰《西部痞子英雄》為例

辛約翰向來被譽為二十世紀愛爾蘭文學的經典作家。在他的幾部劇作當中，又以《西部痞子英雄》最為人所稱道。本劇確實為愛爾蘭文學的經典之作，難怪它曾榮登葉慈等人創立的艾比劇場最常演出的劇本。正如批評家所言，辛約翰巧妙融合喜劇場景與嚴肅議題的技法高超，成為閱讀與詮釋該作品的一大挑戰。本文從筆者翻譯該劇本的挫敗與挑戰為出發點，探討其中語言、文化和文學翻譯的相關議題。翻譯絕非易事，而文學翻譯更是難上加難。本文指出譯者在翻譯《西部痞子英雄》的過程中難免感到挫敗，但同時也能進一步欣賞辛約翰的文字藝術與人生思考，並深刻體會語言、文化，以及社會之間的錯綜複雜關係。翻譯本身向外開放的多元意義，不只常使譯者感到挫敗，也同時為譯者帶來無窮的樂趣。

「存有之有所不對應」：評戴從容譯《芬尼根的守靈夜》（第一卷）

臺灣英美文學中譯書目：2001-2013

這份書目收錄二〇〇一年至二〇一三年間臺灣地區出版、臺灣譯者翻譯（或合譯）之英美文學作品，含括詩歌、散文隨筆、戲劇、小說等文類，總計作者一百餘筆，作品超過三百筆。此處「英美文學」之定義乃除了英國、美國文學作品之外，尚包含新興英文文學或其他英語語系文學，如翁達傑、柯慈、奈波爾等人作品，而排除通俗與流行文學。 本書目旨在呈現過去十數年間臺灣本地譯者翻譯英美文學的樣貌。從書目資料可以發現，經典文學被翻譯出版的頻率遠高於晚近作品，其中又以小說為最。這個現象印證了臺師大賴慈芸教授在為臺灣師範大學翻譯研究所與遠流出版社合作的「經典文學新譯計畫」所寫序文〈聽見譯者的聲音〉中所提到的，「所謂經典，就是不斷召喚新譯本的作品。」然而，筆者在彙整資料過程中亦發現，無論經典或新作，臺灣英美文學中譯的數量遠不及中國大陸，長久下來過度依賴對岸的譯本與譯者，對本地翻譯場域可能造成不良後果。 由於書目資料蒐集時間倉促，自無法盡善，遺漏訛誤更在所難免，唯有留待他日補遺訂正。

何處是歸家？李維拉之《瑪莉莎》中的空間與倫理

本文旨在討論波多黎各裔劇作家何塞．李維拉(José Rivera)的《瑪莉莎》(Marisol)如何透過描繪世界末日的黑色幽默，檢視都市生態中經濟發展與社會正義的衝突。一九八○年代紐約的遊民議題觸發了人類歸家的想像，而能代表無遠弗屆、高度發展之文明領地的，究竟是地理空間、浮華物質等資本關係的高度擴延與累積，還是發展相濡以沫、唇齒相依等人類對環境的責任與情義之價值？本論文以列維納斯(Emmanuel Lévinas)的「毗鄰」概念為中心，透過空間、倫理、戲劇理論等多元對話來討論《瑪莉莎》一劇所呈現社會空間所曝露出的倫理與知識型焦慮，指出李維拉似乎暗示我們應以「倫理」，而非「理性」，來作為度量神話真理、生活準則的機制。李維拉所點出革命之倫理意涵，正如列維那斯恆動的「正說」中，不斷崩解「已說」所醞釀出來的倫理之革命面向。
